Tips on Buying Cars: Used Car loan in my name for other driver, credit situation, disbursement

Question
Hi there, I think I have a fairly simple question.  I want to purchase a late-model used car (around $1000) for my finance.  He has poor credit and is in law school (no extra $) and I have excellent credit and access to a credit union.  If I apply for the loan in my name only, is it be possible to only register the car and get insurance for it in his name?  We plan to pay off the loan in the next four months with he gets an academic disbursement.

Thanks!  Emily

Answer
Very few banks would go along with this arrangement; they usually require any person on the registration, title or insurance policy to also be on the loan.  You need to find a bank that allows a "registrant-only" clause.  It basically states that he would not stand in the way of the bank enforcing any of its financial duties in relation to the contract (such as repossessing the car for non-payment).  With the current credit situation, I'm thinking it would be almost impossible to find a bank that would be this liberal.
