Tips on Buying Cars: cherokee, rule of thumb, weak point

Question
Hi Jeremy, thanks a lot for answer this, I intend to buy a Cherokee, my first car here in Canada!, I know that  with the current, and soaring, prices of gas isn't easy to have a 4x4 this days, moreover my salary is modest, but what do you want, is the dream of my life!. Now please to the questions 1. For 2000 US dollars it is worth to buy a Cherokee or for that price I only will got a lemon? and 2. What are the weakest points of the Cherokee, I mean what a pre-owned Cherokee buyer should always check?, for instance I heard that the transmission are always a source of problems with the Cherokee and 3. as a rule of thumb up to what mileage I should buy a Cherokee?.
Thank you very very much Jeremy, thanks for your time
Damian

Answer
Damian,

Thanks for your questions.  Lets see in relation to your first question you will more than likely just get a worn out old Cherokee for $2000 but you can do your research and search around for the right one that has been taken care off.  As per your second question, the weak point of the Cherokee are the transmission and the seals and gaskets.  Check for leaks or residue sitting around the joints of the engine.  If there is abnormal or excess residue sitting there then it might be the source of a problem to look further into.  As per your final question, a Cherokee is a proven vehicle with a good track record.  Mileage isn't really a big issue to look at as much as how well the vehicle has been taken care of.  Make sure that you get a certified mechanic to look at whatever vehicle you are going to buy before you buy.  Get them to check it out.  They are able to look at things and tell if the vehicle has been taken care of very well or not.  Things that the normal eye like yours and mine would not be able to tell from just looking.

I hope this answers all of your questions.  If I can be of any further assistance, let me know.

Thanks - Jb
