Tips on Buying Cars: rebuilt titled vehicles, bmw z4, salvage title

Question
I read your answer re. buying a reguilt Ford Focus. When I looked into it several years ago, I found my insurance company would nor insure for comp & collision, the banks and credit unions would not finance one, and there was no warranty available. Is this still the case as far as you know? Is there a general % of private party retail value you could assign to a rebuilt vehicle. I am looking again, and this time at a 2004 BMW Z4 (3.0 w/manual transmission)

Answer
Mike,

Most finance companies will NOT finance a salvage title vehicle.  I have been in this business for 10 years, and I can't name a finance company that will finance one.

As far as insurance companies, I think that most insurance companies will issue insurance on a salvage titled vehicle.

As far a percent of PP value?  Well that is debatable.  There really isn't any written rule, or written advice.  I personally think that it would be worth no more than 50% of PP value, probably even less.  It really depends on you.

I hope this helps.

Thanks -

Jeremy
