Tires: tire size options, speedometer accuracy, tire placard

Question
QUESTION: I am looking to buy tires for my Ford 150, when I look at tires on line I get a couple of options if I select LT I get  LT245/75/16 and If I select non LT I get 235/65/17. I know the LT are a bigger load capacity but won't a different size affect my speedometer accuracy?

ANSWER: Tom,

I think the first question has to be "What's on there now?"

Look at the tire size and read what the sidewall says.  Then look at the vehicle tire placard.  Those 2 ought to be the same.  Are they?(The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.)

BTW, it doesn't matter who makes the tire or what pressure is listed on the tire's sidewall, if the tire size is the same as the placard, then the pressure listed on placard is also appropriate.

The two tire sizes you listed fit on different rims (the last 2 digits in the size are the rim diameter in inches), so unless you want to change rims, you should use what the vehicle tire placard says unless it is different than what the tire size is now.

QUESTION: unfortunately they put the passenger 235/65/17 on my rims which now has a bit of a lipfrom the rim showing. Is this cause for concern and how will it effect my speedometer?

ANSWER: Tom,

I am not sure I know what it is you are describing.  Perhaps a photo would be helpful.

And, no, whatever is going on around the rim will not affect your speedometer.

QUESTION: Sorry Barry, My original question was when purchasing tires for my F150 I kept getting these 2 options to put on my truck. LT245/75/16 and if I went to a passenger tire 235/65/17 since I don't use it for hauling I went with the passenger 235/65/17. These replaced my old LT245/75/16  tires.
So now as you can see in the picture I have a bit of a lip exposed from my rim. and I am wondering with the change in  size of tire will it affect speedometer? and secondly the 235/65/17 tires are now on a rim made for LT245/75/16. could this be problematic in any way like air loss or damage to rim or tire?
Thanks for your answers.

Answer
Tom,

This is now more confusing than before.

But first the photo:  It appears that the bead isn't fully seated.  I think that will remedy itself.

But if I look very carefully at the photo, in the lower right hand corner I can make out part of the tire size.  What I can read is "5/70R16" (or 15) - so it makes me question everything you've told me so far.

So let's do this by the numbers:

1)  What does the vehicle tire placard say the original tires size and pressure was?  Please include the letters before the size.

2)  What does the sidewall of the tire say is the size?  Please include the letters before the tire size.  I want you to actually read it, and not do this from memory, because I think you are confused about what is actually on the truck now.
