Tires: Tire Identification, uniroyal laredo, rain tire

Question
I'm trying to determine the manufacture date and application for a tire I have. It's never been mounted and still has the manufactures sticker on it. Here is the info I have off the label and tire: Uniroyal, Laredo,The Rain Tire, Tubeless, H78-15, replaces 8.55-15, white sidewall, tread- 2 ply nylon cord- 2 ply dynacor rayon belts, sidewall- 2 ply nylon cord, 5545-162-02, max load 1770 @ 32 psi, 68F 243, Super Low Profile, load range 8, 3075AX, V-1
Thank you for your help

Answer
Glenn,

First, I wrote up a web page to aid folks in deciphering the DOT codes:

http://www.barrystiretech.com/dotcoding.html

NONE of the information you posted conforms to the coding structure for the DOT code.  I would suggest you look on the other side of the tire to see if you can find a string of numbers/letters that is 10 or 11 digits long.

Second, the tire size (H78-15) is an obsolete tire size, which last appeared in the 1970's.  It is quite likely the tire was produced BEFORE the DOT code was instituted - and if that is true, then it is also quite likely we can only guess at how old the tire is, because the records of how Uniroyal coded their date of manufacture are probably lost. BTW, the DOT coding structure was introduced in 1968.

But application? This was probably a tire designed for pickup truck usage.  The "Load Range" is a clue - but instead of "8", I'll bet that is a "B".  Load Ranges come in letters.
