Tires: trailer tires, maximum inflation, inflation pressure

Question
will a 245/75 R16 work in place of a 750 16LT.  They are for my horse trailer.  Thanks.

Answer
Mike,

A 7.50-16LT is 8.7" wide on a 6" rim, with a diameter of 31.8" and a load carrying capacity of 2755# at 75 psi for a Load Range E (10 Ply Rating)

An LT245/75R16 is 9.8" wide on a 7" rim (9.4" on a 6" rim) with a diameter of 30.5" and a load carrying capacity of 3042# at 80 psi for a Load Range E.

So with the exception of the width, this is a good fitment.  First, check to make sure you have at least an inch and a half clearance to the trailer frame.  Normally I would tell you to match the load range, but because I know that trailer manufacturers tend to undersize the tire, I would recommend you use a Load Range E and use the maximum 80 psi.

And just so you don't make a mistake:  DO NOT USE anything except LT or ST type tires.  You can tell because the maximum inflation pressure for LT's and ST's will be 80 psi, and the other will not.

Nevertheless, it would be good to weigh your trailer fully loaded and to check to be sure the tires are not overloaded.
