Tires: Winter Tires, tire placard, passenger tires

Question
I am lost here.  I have a Ford Ranger 4X4 short box.  Last winter was not good with all season tires even with weight on the truck.  The Ford dealer has suggested winter tires that are passenger tires, not rated for light truck.  Size is 16 in.   I want to be sure I am putting the right tires on.  Any suggestions.  Many thanks.

Answer
Cheryl,

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

BTW, it doesn't matter who makes the tire or what pressure is listed on the tire's sidewall, if the tire size is the same as the placard, then the pressure listed on placard is also appropriate.

Your vehicle placard should tell you that your truck came with "P" type tires - and that's what you should stick with.  Lots of technical reasons for this, but historically LT type tires existed before there were small trucks, so small trucks were designed to use "P" type tires.
