Tires: tire sizes, tire placard, doorpost

Question
We have a 1989 S10 4cyl 2wd, the research I have done says we need a 235/70/15 tire, my husband says a 235/75/15 will fit no problem. But my mom who is buying the tires, says her s10 runs 14 inch not 15 inch. Will a 235/75/15 tire work????

Answer
Inez,

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

I think this applies to vehicles sold in Canada as well.

I looked up in Tire Guides, a book that summarizes the placard for vehicles sold in the US (and, again, I think this would apply to Canada) and I see 14" and 15" tires listed for 1989 Chevy S-10's.

So if the placard says the tires are 14', then the 15" will not fit on the rims.  If not, then it's best to use the same size listed.  This guarantees that the tires will fit.

BTW, Tire Guides says the P235/75R15's only came on 4X4 off-road versions of 1989 S-10's so I'll bet there will be fitment problems with this size if your vehicle is not one of those!
