Tires: Nitrogen filled tire maintenance, nitrogen inflation, nitrogen filled tires

Question
What should be the process for maintaining nitrogen filled tires.  I realize the psi is a little different.  Your expertise would be appreciated.

Answer
Johan,

I am not a fan of nitrogen inflation.  While it does cause any issues, many of its benefits are greatly exaggerated.  Plus oxygen will migrate into the air chamber according the Law of Partial Pressure of Gases.  This has been verified in several studies.  In theory, the air chamber would need to be purged periodically to maintain the purity of the nitrogen.

Obviously using air to top up the pressure accelerates the introduction of oxygen into the air chamber, so if you wanted to maintain the purity of the air chamber, the tire should only be topped up from a pure nitrogen source - which can be inconvenient to do.

BTW, aside from gases that will actively attack the rubber, the tire doesn't care what it is inflated with - it behaves the same.  Carbon dioxide, air, nitrogen, helium, etc. could all be used as inflation gasses and the tire behaves the same way - including the pressure required to carrying the load.
