Tires: Replacing Tires, acura integra gs, fender wells

Question
Barry,

I own a 1997 Acura Integra GS that calls for 195/55/15 tires.  I need to replace them before inspection and have seen other Integras with tires other than the 195/55/15.  The auto techs tell me I should remain with the OE, which happen to Michelin XGTV4 and cost a ton.  I am wondering what other tire sizes I could put on my car besides the 195/55/15's that would be comparable but last longer and provide a smoother ride.  I was told that the 195/55/15 Michelin XGTV4s are there for suspension, etc., but let's be honest, I am not driving at a 100 plus MPH.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Steve

Answer
Steve,

It's always a good idea to remain with the OE size and type.

According to Tire Guides, your vehicle came with P195/60R14 85H on 5 1/2" wheels.  That means the size you have on now is different, however, other Integra's came with P195/55R15 84V - that's a V rated construction - on 6" wheels.

If you change to a lower speed rating you not only lose the handling and ultimate grip a V rated construction would offer, but you would also reduce your safety margin.  Look at it this way, if I have something and only use 50% of its capability, that's a lot safer than using 75% or 100%!

Assuming you have 6" wheels, you can use a different size so long as it has at least the same load carrying capacity and fits on the wheels.  A P205/50R15 sounds like a good bet - It has enough load capacity and fits on the wheel and is close in diameter so your speedometer won't be affected - however the clearance in the fender wells ought to be checked as this size is a little wider.  I should also point out that this is the wrong direction for ride comfort, but the right direction for handling.  Unfortunately, the other direction in size doesn't exist.

I think an H rated construction is called for here.  That's what was originally installed and it still makes sense.  There are tires out there that will meet your needs and they don't have a steep price tag.

Hope this helps.
