Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: First bike, weight..., first, bike

So I'm looking to get a bike this summer. I REALLY like the Kawasaki Ninja. I'm worried about what I can actually handle, I am 5'7 and 280 lbs so I don't think a 250cc would be the best bike for me based on your previous comments, and I love the 500 & 650 but I don't want a bike that I can't handle. Could you please recommend the size I should start with?

If either the 500 or 650 Ninja fit you physically, they'd be a good choice for a first bike. It's the 600s (inline fours) that are the handful for beginners. The 500 and 650 are 2-cyls that are much easier to manage, yet still ride and handle like a sportbike.

Also look at the Suzuki SV 650, if neither of the Ninjas fit you. The BMW F650GS would also be a good bike, though expensive.
