Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Foot Tingling, Nerve Pain., suzuki gsxr 750, pins and needles

Question
Hi, just wondered if you have ever come accross anybody that gets tingling in one of there feet after riding. I recently bought a suzuki gsxr 750. Everytime i ride it fro more than an hour, my toe and one side of my feet feel like they have pins and needles. I am 6,4" so my legs are quite compressed in normal riding position. Can you offer any advice. Many thanks in advance, Chris.

Answer
I have the same problem. It's not as common on my VFR as it is on my SV650 race bike, but it happens on both. My right foot essentially "falls asleep." It's way worse on the SV, which has a lowered seat and deep rearset pegs.

I don't know what causes this. I think it's a combination of the bent/cramped position of the leg and the way my clothing pinches around the inside of my right knee when I ride, which restricts blood flow to the toes. I have found that wearing jeans (underneath my Aerostich) makes it worse, so now I stick to lightweight cotton slacks. My guess is there's an important artery on the inside of the lower thigh that's getting compressed.

There is probably a better person (physician, physical therapist) who could offer you stretches and exercises to do that would enhance blood flow to your toes. You could also try experimenting with foot position (on your toes, on the balls of your feet, on your arches, on your heels) on the pegs, so when you started to feel the tingling, you could switch position for a few minutes to get the blood moving again. Getting off the bike or standing up while riding helps me, too, especially on longer trips when I am not yet ready to stop.
