Trucking: Dump Truck Business, rear axles, ready mixed concrete

Question
Hi Bob,

I am looking to finance a dump truck to haul stone & gravel for a company that manufactures in quarrying and ready-mixed concrete .  If possible, could you please tell me which truck would you suggest and any information on how to start out with the dump truck business?  I currently live in NJ.

Answer
Hi David,

I would see what other guys are running and talk to dealers to see whats selling.  Dealers in your area will know the exact specs of the trucks running in your area.  My guess is that you want a tri-axle with maybe a 16,000# front axle and at least a 44,000# rear axles.  Mack is a heavy hitter in the dump truck business and their model CH613 is very popular.  You can usually find good deals on these trucks, but keep your eyes open.  Look for the truck with the specs you want and need, not necessarily the model.

I found a great forum at...

These guys can help you with questions.  Two routes you can go are starting your own company or leasing out.  I would look into perhaps leasing out to a bigger company until you learn the ropes.  Just look in the yellow pages, or stop by the manufacturing company and see what companies run out of there.

Good luck!
