Trucking: Transportation Broker, entrepreneur magazines, repetitive moves

Question
I work as a credit research investigator, doing credit reports on trans broker, and shippers, I was thinking about starting my own broker company, do you know the approximate cost of starting that up?  I already have a computer, phone and internet, I would just need to get an MC# and a bond.  Also do you know what kind of fees a broker will charge the carrier to find that freight.  And my last question is do you know where I would establish myself with carriers and shippers?  Thanks for any info you can provide me.

Answer
Jamie, for the legal licensing requirements go to FMCSA:

For startup guidance start with a few basic books:

And check out membership in TIA for ongoing support:

Aside from the FMCSA registration and bond you can probably start with little expense other than time.  The key to success in this business is relationships.  Finding the carriers and shippers will take time and word of mouth referrals so you need to provide superior service and communication.  Fees will vary by market but you should expect a markup of 20% to 25% consistently to cover your operating costs.  For large repetitive moves you may need to go lower to compete.  Best of luck.
