Trucking: getting started, elkart indiana, ford f350

Question
Hi i am looking to get started in trucking i am looking to get a Ford F350 or F450 and would like to start out just hauling campers at first. Then at a latter date start hauling cars do you know of any places in the Atlanta area that i could do this for. And which truck would you recomend the F350 or F450.

Answer
Hi Mark.

My theory is "better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it".  That being said, I'd look at the F450.  Campers are not heavy, but if you haul heaviers loads later on, you'll be glad to have the F450.

As far as getting loads, I would hit up the RV/camper dealers in Atlanta.  I know a lot of guys who go up to Elkart, Indiana and tow campers all across the U.S.  Ask the RV/camper dealers how you can haul for them, plain and simple.  Eventually, you find the person who makes the decisions and you can give them a sales pitch.

In car hauling, you can either go to the car auction or hit up dealerships.  New car dealers will have contracts from the factory, but you could do dealer to dealer hauling.  The used car dealers don't pay much, try to avoid them, if you can.  Hauling for individuals pays good, but is tough.  You can go hundreds of miles out of your way for a single car.  Make sure it's worth it.

Write out a business plan and some of these decisions will be a lot easier.

Good luck!
