Trucking: car hauling, commercial plates, mc dot

Question
Hi Bob, I am wanting to know if I haul cars under a 26000lbsGCVWR. do I need any MC/DOT#'s or permits to haul from state to state? I'd be using a dually with a 2 car trailer. Can I use regular license plates or do I need commercial plates? Probably would need to carry cargo insurance, but would I need anything but regular auto insurance on truck and trailer?. Thanks Thomas.

Answer
Hi Thomas.

If you do any type of commercial hauling, especially across state lines, Uncle Sam wants his cut.  Even with a small set up, you'll probably need an DOT/MC number along with a base plate.  Contact your state's Department of Transportation and they can help you out.  Let me warn you now, if you try to "sneak" by and get caught, you'll have a nightmare on your hand.  The DOT will make your life miserable and it won't be a simple fine.  Stay on their good side and make that call.

You will absolutely need cargo/liability insurance.  Make sure you have enough and that the company knows it's customer cars and not your personal vehicles.  Don't go out of business because your underinsured.  I've seen it happen.  Look at www.progressivecommercial.com for help.

Finally, a bit of advice.  Take pictures of every car you load at every angle.  Mark on a check-sheet any defects, scratches, dents, etc. and have the customer sign off.  I have a friend who learned this one the hard way.  He ended up buying (or his insurance did) a new paint job on a Ferrari.  He had no pictures to show that there was previous marks in the paint when he picked it up.  Now, he takes about 15 pictures on each car in a digital camera.
