Trucking: hauling boats, ford pickup truck, race trailers

Question
I know you get alot of questions Ive looked through them to see if any apply to me. I have a Ford pickup truck and want to hitch pull boats nation wide. Is it required under law to have my authority, being that Im just pulling boats for hire of course. I carry commercial ins. and can get cargo ins for each boat as needed. any advice would be awesome

Answer
Hi Tim.

Technically, yes, you should have your own authority.  You can check with your state's Department of Transportation, but I'm sure they want you to get it.  Anytime you do hauling across state lines for profit, you can bet Uncle Sam wants his share.  That's why you see on so many rv's with race trailers and certain hot shots "NOT FOR HIRE".  That's when their personal vehicles.  You could try and slide by, but the fines you would get if your pulled over could be huge.  When the DOT wants to play hardball, they're worse than the IRS!  Since you already have insurance, it shouldn't be a big deal, but contact the DOT and they'll get you legal.

Good luck!
