Trucking: engine brakes, engine brakes, exhaust brakes

Question
I would like to know why truckers use engine brakes (the ones that make all the noise), and if they are necessary. I ask because in my neighborhood I've noticed they are using them more often and they are very annoying. I don't want to complain about them if it is something they really need to do, though, because I like truckers, I think they are great people. So I'd like to find out some background info on engine brakes please. thank you

Answer
Hi Robin,

I understand your concern.  Engine brakes (also Engine Retarders, Exhaust Brakes, etc.) are used regularly with most of today's heavy duty diesel engines.  Their primary purpose is to help to control and slow down heavy trucks on long, steep hills or in stop-and-go driving (such as in heavy traffic or streets with a lot of stop signs or signal lights).  If you have either of these conditions near your home, this is why the truckers are using their engine brakes. Benefits to truckers using engine brakes include supplementing the service brake system which will extend the life of the brakes. Reducing wear and tear and the cost of maintaining the brake systems is a big incentive.  The brakes and tires also stay cooler, so they perform much better and give the driver better control. This is a much safer operating condition.

Are the trucks near your home hauling very heavy loads?  Has their been an increase in construction or is their a new manufacturing plant or distibution center near by? All of these things might be a factor in the increase in the use of the engine brakes and consequently, the noise.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.
