Truck Repair: IH T444E cold starting problem, engine fires, pump reservoir

Question
I maintain a fleet with many of these t444e engines.
I'm having a common problem with the '99 and newer engines on a few of the trucks. When first started after sitting over night they will start up and run for a few seconds and then the engine will stop and can't be restarted without adding oil to the high pressure oil pump reservoir. If I remove the oil presure sensor from the top of the reservoir and put in a quart of oil it will restart and run fine all day and restart all day also, but it will do the same thing again in the morning. The engine will not stall if the rpms are increased to about 1500 rpms as soon as the engine fires up. I have tried replacing the quick fill check valve ball and spring, but the problem still exists. It appears to me to be a problem with a delay in the oil pump supplying of the oil to the high presure oil pump reservoir. Could it be a pickup tube problem or the oil pump worn? It seems like the oil pump loses its prime and takes to long to reprime and pump oil. Could the injectors be using more oil than before, thus draining the reservoir before the oil gets there? Are the quick fill check valve and the anti drain back check valve the same thing? Have you come across this problem before?
The trucks that I have that are older than '99 have alot more hours on them and have never had this problem. What did IH change on the engine which may make this problem more likely to happen? Any advice would be great, otherwise I think I may have to start with the pickup tube and oil supply pump and use the trial and error method.
Thanks'

Answer
I have some experience with these engines --- I also have 1999 trucks with this engine -- 200,000 miles on them --- I have never experienced this problem --- The quick fill valve and antidrain back chekc valve are not the same. -- The injectors don't consume oil -- no amount of wear will cause them to use more oil - As far as I know nothing was changed on the engines unit 2001.  I would bet your problem lies in the high pressure oil pump.  These tend to fail on higher mile engines.
