Truck Repair: 2000 Silverado Electrical Gremlin, dash lights, loose wire

Question
I have a 2000 Silverado 2500 4x4 with 6.0 and AT. Recently, the dash lights started flickering on and off sporadically, just the dash, no other lights went out. Also the transmission would shift into Drive, but not into any other gear other than First. Physically putting it in 2nd or 3rd did nothing. I had to drive home in 1st gear, that was no fun. I checked the tranny fluid, it is all good.  Are these two connected at all? I imagine it is probably a bad ground but thought I would get the experts opinion. I know the dealer will charge an arm and a leg just to look at it. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Answer
A bad ground would be my first opinion, followed closely be a loose wire connector.

Make sure there is a good ground from the engine to the firewall, and then just start wiggling connectors.

You may inadvertently fix it temporarily that way, so you might just want to do one area at a time, like under the dash, and run it for a few days, unless you actually find one that can make the problem come and go.

Ignition switch connection is one to not forget also, as well as where all the wires go thru the firewall.
