Truck Repair: 1988 s-10 Turn signal replacement, turn signal switch, google searches

Hello Van,
Wipers are hard to turn off (Have to find the "special place" on the rotating turn signal stock where they will turn off)and so I believe the switch has gone bad.  I bought the turn signal lever on-line as I thought that was the switch, wrong, but now I have a new stalk. I broke the small plastic cover on the bottom of the steering column trying to see how you get to the turn signal switch, and looking at the switch I still can't figure out how you change one!  Do you know how to get to it? What has to be removed and how? Appreciate any help you can offer!!!!

I am away from home, but I have a favorite at home about just that.
Trouble is, I can't access it from here, and it will be a few days before I am home.
