Truck Repair: 1981 f150 300 six ignition, ford specialist, service writers

Question
Intermittently this engine will just die. This is a manual transmission and the engine will not refire as it is coasting down. Even if I turn the ignition off and back on as it is coasting down it won't refire. The only way to start and it always works is to push in the clutch and start the engine with the starter. It always immediately refires and everything is ok maybe for a week or so. This has been doing this for over a year. About two years ago it had new distributor, wires, cap, rotor, and plugs. Still original coil and ignition module. The engine has about 125,000 miles on it and runs fine.

    Any suggestions appreciated thanks.

Answer
Hello Ronald,
The computer seems to be loosing a signal that only gets recieved during engine cranking. Wheather the ignition switch might be the cause, or something in the ecm or wiring, I don't know. But the activation of the crank process seems to be what corrects it.
I am afraid it may be in the ecm, but that is just a guess, and I hate to see someone buy those expensive parts on just a guess, so I recommend you try a Ford specialist, probably at a dealership, to see if he has heard of the problem.
I realize it is almost impossible to get past those service writers that want to connect their scan tool for $70.00 diagnosis before even considering talking to a mechanic in the back, but sometimes you can get something from them.
Good luck,
Van
