Truck Repair: fuel sending unit, fuel gauge, chevy silverado

Just bought a 1998 chevy silverado 4wd extended cab, three door. I notice that the  fuel gauge read half tank. for awhile it would go from half to 3/4 and to full. I put 6 gallons of gas and it went up to half almost. I  hope this doesn't mean a fuel pump and sending unit. I heard  they  come as one unit.The dealer won't replace this, since he sold it at a low price.

Hi Tom,
A dealership usually replaces them as a tank assembly, but the pump can be bought and replaced separately, and I would think the gauge sender could also, although I haven't replaced one of them.
But it is possible that the problem is a loose fuse, a loose wire connection, or the gauge itself, so getting a manual with a troubleshooting chart is the first step.
