For one thing, all the air needs to be properly bled from the system.
Then exactly what is "any lenth of time"? Seconds, minutes, or a mile or two down the road?
Have you pumped a little fuel out into a nice clean glass jar, and looked to see if there is a slug of water in the bottom, under the fuel?
If you had water in the fuel light, it may be that you have about a gallon or two of water in the tank.
If water isn't the problem, and you can get down the road a ways, remove the cap on the tank, and see if it is causing a vacuum in the tank.
