Vintage Cars: Stalling, mercedez benz, smog equipment

Question
My Engine
My Engine
After my father's passing I inherited his 168 Mercedez-Benz 280S.  I rebuilt the carburators, because the car had been sitting for a few years.  It stalls when I put it in gear and I noticed that if I cover one of the carbs, while in park and idle, it will start to die, but if I cover the second Carb, nothing happens.  Like there must be somekind of a leak.  I also wanted to remove the smog equipment, but I noticed that the pump is used to adjust the belt.  Is there a bracket that would make the power steering pump adjustable so I could eliminate the smog pump?

Answer
these cars are very vacuum sensitive, could be that you have a gasket leak or other, however if you cover a carb and nothing happens , I would inspect that carb for faulty  fuel delivery issues. If you cover it and NOTHING happens , it must not be delivering fuel especially since the the other when covered caused the engine to sputter ( as if that is the only one delivering fuel)  The smog pump can be removed, just gotta use some inginuity to figure out how to bypass, nothing on the market to buy , most guys fabricate a bracket
