Vintage Cars: VIN location, screw holes, rectangular pattern

Question
I have a 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe sedan and need to find the VIN number.  do you know where to locate it?

Answer
Not specifically. I went and looked at a 1926 Chevrolet we have in the shop and it has no id whatsoever.
That said, in the prewar era id plates were attached with screws--usually on the firewall, but
sometimes on the dash. The books I have for the 40's id vehicles by the front bumper and grill
not by the id plate.  Try looking for 4 empty screw holes in a rectangular pattern in those
two areas.
