How to Test Drive a Used Car

One of the most important aspects when buying a used car is patience. Too often people wait until their current vehicle is ready to die and they need a car immediately. Once you make the decision to buy a different vehicle, there are several items to look for when you test drive a used car.

You should always take notes when you look at a used car and when you test drive. Think about the different types of cars you are interested in and narrow down your choices. When you are ready for a test drive take along your clipboard with items to check off. You can rate the car both on appearance and mechanical durability. You must keep an open mind and do not fall in love with the car before you test drive. Take your time and review your notes before making the final purchase.

Before getting into the car to drive, you need to check the tires, the turn signals, the lights, and the engine compartment. Making sure all of the outer components are in good shape will allow you to focus on the test drive. You should also drive the car under a variety of conditions. If you commute through the city every day, drive busy roads and stop and turn frequently. If you drive on the freeway or interstate, take the car out on these roads and check the acceleration. Also listen for loud noises or squeaking tires or belts.

As you are driving pay close attention to the way the transmission shifts. Do you feel any hesitation or jerking? Look at the gauges and make sure they not only work, but there are no warning signals coming on while driving. You should also check the air conditioning and the heat while you are driving the car. Check the gauges again while you have the A/C and heat going. You should also consider the brakes. Are they squishy? Does the pedal go all the way down to the floor when you stop?

Finally, once you have taken a test drive yourself, take the car to a mechanic and have it checked out. You should only do this if you are fairly certain this is the used car you plan to buy. The mechanic will charge you a fee, but it will be worth the time and money. Once you are convinced the car is in great shape, negotiate with seller to make sure you also get a great price.
