The 2006-2011 Honda Civic is a very compelling package. It's spacious inside with great fuel economy and good power, while remaining reasonably fun to drive. The interior is well-made and comfortable. The basic Honda mechanicals have also proven reliable. Available as a coupe and sedan, too, the Civic is a no-brainer for those looking for reasonably priced transportation.
The previous generation Nissan Altima, built from 2007-2012, was one of the best family sedans of its time. It offers good fuel economy, good safety scores and plenty of space for four or five passengers. The four-cylinder engine is strong, too.

It's difficult to go wrong with a used Toyota Corolla. They're common on the used car market and the relative mechanical simplicity means they're endlessly reliable. While the Corolla, when new, was behind the times on in-car technology and the latest powertrain innovation, it was reasonably inexpensive. It's also spacious for its class and boasts excellent fuel economy. As inexpensive transportation, the Corolla is a safe bet.
