Where to Find a Hummer Engine Number

Hummer refers to a series of trucks sold by General Motors. If you own one of these trucks, you can find its engine number very easily. Engine number, also called Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), is a code that identifies your Hummer. It is composed of seventeen unique digits and characters. Once you find this code, you can decipher it to track registrations, recalls, insurance coverage and warranty claims.

  • Look at the Hummer's dashboard on the driver side of the truck. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, if you don't find the number there, open the side door of the driver seat and look at its doorpost. These are the two places where you are most likely to find your particular Hummer model's VIN.

  • Try to find the number on your vehicle's insurance card/insurance policy.

  • Look it up in the vehicle title and registration documents.

  • Decipher the number once you have located it. According to Hummer Knowledge Base, there are seventeen characters that constitute your truck's VIN.
The first digit refers to the manufacturing country. The second digit refers to the company/make, which is AM General Corporation. Similarly, the rest of the digits refer to the vehicle type, engine, transmission/drive, truck line/series, gross vehicle weight rating, check digit, model year and plant code, followed by a six digit serial code.
