How to Obtain Arkansas Car Tags

Arkansas law states that within 30 days of the transfer of title or lien release, the owner must apply for title and registration. New residents are also required to have their vehicles registered and titled in the state of Arkansas within 30 days of becoming a resident. Registrations must be renewed every 12 months. Failure to comply can result in fines and penalties.

First Time Registrations

  • Gather your paperwork. You will need proof of liability insurance, provided by your insurance company. A title is required for registration, but you can title and register the car at the same time. If you are a new resident, you will also need your registration from your former state.

  • Visit your County Assessor's Office to obtain proof that the vehicle has been assessed and that property taxes have been paid on it.

  • Complete a Vehicle Registration Application, available online at the State of Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration's website. This is a one-page form that asks for the details on the vehicle, such as the make, model, year and color. You will also need to complete the VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, which can be found on your paperwork or on the dashboard of the vehicle. The form also asks for the odometer reading and the names and addresses of the owners.

  • Go to the State Revenue Office in your area to title and register your car. You can find a list of revenue offices at the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration's website.

  • Renew your registration in person at the nearest State Revenue Office. You will need to take your tax assessment, renewal notice or current registration and proof of insurance.
