How to Transfer a Florida Car Title Out of State

If you are moving from Florida to another state and taking your vehicle with you, you are required by law to transfer your car title and registration to your new state of residence. You do need the Florida title for the transfer, so if you have lost it be sure to get a duplicate title from the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles before leaving the state. Once you have your Florida car title, it is easy to get it transferred over to your new state.

Things You'll Need

  • Florida registration paperwork
  • Photo ID
  • Proof of residency
  • New title application
  • Go to your local DMV office in the state to which you have moved. Be sure to have your Florida car title with you.

  • Look at the mileage on the odometer of your car before going inside. Write down the number, as you will need it for your new title.

  • Present your Florida car title, your odometer reading and your current Florida car registration to the clerk in the DMV office, with your driver's license, or other photo ID, and proof of residency in the new state. This can be a utility bill, an apartment lease agreement or something similar with your new address.

  • Fill out the application for a new title that the clerk will give you. You will enter in the odometer reading as well as information from the Florida title, including the vehicle identification number (VIN).

  • Give the completed form to the clerk and pay the necessary fee for the new title. The fee varies by state. If you will be driving the vehicle, you will also have to get new registration when you get the new title, which will be an additional fee.
