How to Register a Vehicle Online

If you recently moved to a new state, bought a car (used or new), received a car as a gift or just want to renew your current registration, you can register your vehicle online in most states. Visit your state's specific Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website to check if this service is available to you; if it is, follow the steps below to complete your vehicle registration online.

Things You'll Need

  • Current vehicle registration
  • Valid and current vehicle insurance card
  • Title of the car (if it is a new car purchased or gift)
  • Dealer Report of Sales
  • You driver's license
  • Current mileage of the vehicle
  • Major credit card, debit card or electronic check
  • Gather the documents listed. If your car is newly purchased from a car lot, you will receive a Dealer Report of Sales containing a number that you need to register the car online. This document is optional if the dealership registers the vehicle for you. If renewing your current expired registration, you will need the previous registration card. Your car's title will contain its Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN.

  • On your state's DMV website, navigate to the page to "Register Your Vehicle Online" or the like.

  • Follow the steps outlined on the webpage to enter all current information, and double-check for accuracy.

  • Pay online using a major credit card, debit card or electronic check (if available).

  • Click on the "Submit" button and print out the confirmation page provided to you. If you do not have a printer, write down the confirmation number. This is your proof of registration until the new stickers and license plates arrive in the mail. Driving without this information may result in a ticket if you are pulled over by the police.
