Negative Effects of Hybrid Cars

Because hybrid cars use less gas, they release lower amounts of carbon monoxide and are thought to decrease the country's dependence on oil. Hybrid cars are increasingly popular, but they do have some disadvantages.

Vehicle Price

  • Hybrid cars cost more up front. For instance, in 2008, a buyer could purchase a new Honda Civic DX for $15,000, but the hybrid version started at $22,600.

Battery Cost

  • In addition, hybrid car batteries are pricey. They last longer than batteries for standard vehicles, but a replacement can cost from $1,000 to more than $6,000, depending on the year and model of the car.

High-Voltage Battery

  • The high-voltage batteries required by hybrid cars can be dangerous during an accident if the battery wires become exposed.

Lightweight Vehicle

  • Because the hybrid car is lightweight compared to non-hybrid vehicles, it may not be as safe during an accident.

Slow Acceleration

  • Hybrid cars have slower acceleration than standard vehicles, which can be a problem when people need to reach full speed quickly, such as when merging onto busy highways.
