How to Transfer a Car Title in Kansas

Legal ownership of cars, motorcycles and other motor vehicles is dictated by the vehicle titles. If a vehicle is sold, given away or transferred to another owner for any reason, the title must be transferred as well. The process for transferring car titles varies from state to state, but in Kansas, the process is fast and simple. Learn how to get the job done whether you're transferring your auto title to another person or whether another person is transferring a title to you.

From the Current Owner's Perspective

  • Print out a copy of the odometer disclosure form from the Kansas DMV website. A link to this form can be found in the Resources section. Alternatively, you can pick up a copy of this form from any DMV office in the state.

  • Complete and sign the odometer disclosure form. Give this form to the person to whom you're transferring the title.

  • Turn the title over. Sign and date the back of the title and note the mileage in the appropriate spaces.

  • Instruct the person to whom you are transferring the title to sign and date the back of the title in the appropriately marked spaces.

  • Instruct the person to whom you are transferring the title to complete a title application and then take the title, title application and odometer disclosure form to her county treasurer's office to complete the transaction. Remind her that taxes and fees may be assessed at this point and that immediate payment may be required. Your obligation is now fulfilled.

From the Auto Recipient's Perspective

  • Request a signed and dated title from the current owner, along with a completed and signed odometer disclosure form. Make sure the mileage is also noted where appropriate on the back of the title.

  • Take the signed title, odometer disclosure form, title application and your proof of liability insurance to your county treasurer's office. Follow the signs in the building or ask a receptionist where to go to finalize a car title transfer.

You will be charged a $10 title transfer fee in all counties throughout the state, but any additional charges vary by county, so be prepared to pay additional taxes and fees. Upon completion of this process, the treasurer's office will keep the signed title. You will receive a new title in your name in the mail.
