License and registration information can only be searched if the search is in compliance with the Driver's Privacy Protection Act. According to the act, permissible uses for finding this kind of information includes theft, emissions, product alterations, recalls, motor vehicle and driver safety, or advisories. It can also be used by legitimate businesses to verify information that was given to them by an employee. And of course, the information may be used for government purposes such as law enforcement.

  • Record the plate number and VIN of the car.

  • Make a request with the appropriate government agency or your state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • Look for the registration information when the data has been found.

  • Ask to archive the information provided, if it is not already archived.
