How to Locate New GMC Trucks by VIN Number

For a long time, vehicle manufacturers assigned a simple sequential number for the identification of vehicles. But automakers experienced problems with overlapping vehicle identification numbers; some cars never had a unique identification number. Since the 1980s, vehicles have been required to carry a unique 17-digit VIN to track the history of the vehicle.

VINs now not only identify the manufacturer or sequence of production, but they include attributes of the model, vehicle type and assembly plant information. Overlapping numbers do not exist in the new system. VIN searches return accurate information on service records, accidents and owners for a specific vehicle. You can locate information on the GMC truck in question with the VIN.
