Honda Fit Vs. Toyota Matrix

The Honda Fit and the Toyota Matrix both mark their respective Japanese manufacturer's first attempts at building a car/station wagon crossover vehicle. Each vehicle combines sleek exteriors with extended trunk space and the ability to transport five passengers. While each vehicle seems very similar, there are a few key differences between the two models.

Honda Fit

  • The Honda Fit comes standard with a 1.7 liter, 16 valve, 117 horsepower engine and i-VTEC technology for superior acceleration at any speed. Other features include an iPod compatible audio system, folding second row seat for more storage space, and a 5-star NHTSA crash test rating. Starting at a base MSRP of $14,900, the Honda Fit comes with an EPA estimated 27 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway.

Toyota Matrix

  • With a base MSRP starting at $16,290, the Toyota Matrix comes equipped with 2.4 liter, 158 horsepower engine and a front-engine all wheel drive system. Other features include 16 inch aluminum wheels, 4-way adjustable front seats, folding second row, an auxiliary auto jack for iPod integration and power windows, doors and locks. The Matrix boasts an EPA estimated 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway.

Comparison

  • Each vehicle is very similar when it comes to exteriors, making the real differences between the cars the features and performance. The Honda Fit boasts better gas mileage and a price tag of approximately $2,000 less than Toyota's model, however the Matrix provides superior performance and a few additional features. Size-wise, the Toyota Matrix is also bigger than the Honda Fit, allowing more passenger or storage space.

Solution

  • While each vehicle has its strengths and weaknesses, the clear choice is the Honda Fit. The Fit offers consumers superior gas mileage and a more affordable price tag, which therefore makes it a logical choice. While the Matrix offers superior performance, neither vehicle is considered high-performance by any means. With the exception of superior storage space, the Honda Fit outperforms the Matrix in overall value and quality in its class.

Considerations

  • Please test drive both of the aforementioned vehicles before making a purchasing decision.
If buying a used car, always be sure to find out the previous history of a vehicle before making a purchase.

Please remember that buying a car always comes down to personal preference and is not necessarily only based on the features of the vehicle.
