How to Pull Out Stuck Trucks

Many conditions contribute to trucks sliding off road and getting stuck. Mud, ice, snow or other impediments cause off road trucks to lose purchase and conspire to keep the truck in the stuck place. With another vehicle, preferably four-wheel drive equipped, and some properly placed straps, pull the stuck truck up and out of the snarl. Use some tested methods to minimize extra damage to the stuck vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Tow vehicle with tow hitch
  • Tow strap with hooks
  • Hi-lift jack
  • Shovel
  • Wire grates
  • Sand
  • Look under the stuck truck to see if the vehicle is "high centered" on any rocks or obstacles. High centered means the truck is on top of an object that is causing the wheels to not fully touch the ground. If the truck is high centered grab the hi-lift jack. Dig out any snow, mud or sediment around the truck's wheels and add sand to any icy areas. Use the wire grate to walk on for purchase if the ground is slippery or icy.

  • Place the hi-lift jack under a wheel well or solid object under the truck body. Plant the base of the jack on as close to level surface as possible. Lift the truck up with the jack enough to push the shovel under the truck and push the object out of the truck's underside. Do not attempt to crawl under the jacked up truck to get the obstacle. Push it out with the shovel or other lengthy pole.

  • Lower the truck and remove the jack. Have an assistant back the towing vehicle to the stuck truck as close as possible to within 5 or 10 feet. Keep the back of the tow vehicle facing the back of the stuck truck. Attach the tow strap hook to one of the stuck trucks tow loops off the back of the rig. Look for these under the truck bed and near the very rear end. Attach the other tow strap hook to the tow vehicle's tow loop.

  • Put the stuck truck into neutral and make sure the emergency brake is off. Assign a "watcher" to oversee a coordinated removal of the truck. Have another person drive the tow vehicle. Coordinate hand signals for go, stop or slow.

  • Have the tow vehicle slowly begin to inch forward until the tow strap is tight. Do not gun the tow vehicle, let the tow strap slowly tighten. Once tight, put the tow vehicle into a low gear and begin to pull the stuck truck up and out of the predicament. Tow it up to flat and level ground and away from the snarl.
