Mini Cooper Safety Features

The Mini Cooper can look a little like a toy car because it is so small, which can cause potential car buyers to be concerned about its safety. Don't let the size of the car fool you. It is actually very safe, with several safety features built into the car.

Anti-lock Brakes

  • The Mini Cooper is equipped with anti-lock brakes on all four wheels. This prevents the wheels from locking when you slam on the brakes, which helps prevent skidding. If your car does not skid, you are able to control where it is going--especially important in dangerous weather conditions.

Airbags

  • The Mini Cooper is equipped with four airbags--two in front and two along the side. This provides protection if you get in a front-end or side-impact accident. In addition, these air bags are actually "smart": they can monitor the driver and passenger's position and determine the inflation rate based on this information.

Crash Sensor System

  • The Mini Cooper is equiped with a unique safety system called a Crash Sensor System. If you get in an accident, the system will engage to help prevent any further injuries. After the impact of the crash the system will turn on all the interior and exterior hazard lights and unlock all the doors. If the airbags have gone off, the system will automatically cut off the fuel pump to reduce the chance of a fire or explosion due to leaking fuel.

Active Rollover Protection Bar

  • Positioned behind the rear seats is a stiff metal bar. In the event of a rollover, the Mini Cooper's safety system will deploy the protection bar upward to keep the roof from collapsing in on the passengers.
