How to Write an Essay on Learning to Drive

Some driver's education classes require students to write an essay as part of the final exam; often, the topic is about the student's overall experience with learning to drive. For adolescents, getting a driver's license is a rite of passage and a transition into adulthood. When writing an essay about learning to drive, thinking about your own personal experience will help you write a meaningful, informative essay.

  • Brainstorm ideas for your essay. Think back on your driver's ed class and the time you spent practicing driving, then write down the most vivid memories. These ideas will inform the final product.

  • Choose a topic that you want to focus on in your essay. For example, if you struggled with learning to parallel park, but finally overcame the difficulty, you can write about that experience. Pick whichever topic is most meaningful to your own driving experience.

  • Write the first draft of your essay. Typically, essays are composed of a minimum of five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs with supporting details and a conclusion. When writing your introduction, open with a quote or fascinating statement, whatever will grab the reader's attention. Write about your personal experience about learning to drive, focusing on your topic of choice. Conclude with how your experience has helped and taught you as an individual.

  • Proofread your essay and edit any grammatical errors. Have a friend or family member read over it to see if they can relate to your learning to drive experience; a strong essay is one to which the reader can relate.
