How to Tow With a GMC Envoy

A GMC Envoy is a large sports utility vehicle that is capable of towing trailers, vehicles, boats and other items. The GMC Envoy is sold under the Chevrolet brand as the TrailBlazer. The GMC Envoy is a six cylinder vehicle that is available in four wheel drive and rear whee drive. Each model of the GMC Envoy is rated for a standard towing capacity, which is the weight limit you can tow consistently with the vehicle.

  • Look in your car manual or on the back of your GMC Envoy to see which model you have. Towing capacities vary by model. Possible models include SLE, XL SLE, XUV SLE, SLT, XUV SLT and XL SLT. Standard towing capacity can range from 4800 pounds with the XL SLE and XL SLT models up to 5,200 pounds with the XUV SLE and XUV SLT models.

  • Attach a towing ball mount to the hitch on the back of your GMC Envoy, if you don't already have one on the vehicle. You can get a towing ball installed at your local GMC dealer or a place such as U-Haul. Or you can do it yourself. The GMC Envoy comes with a factory standard trailer hitch, but you may need the ball mount for towing some trailers or other items.

  • Securely attach your trailer or other item to the towing hitch and ball mount on your Envoy. This is as simple as sliding it into place. You may need to back your Envoy up to the trailer to get it attached to the hitch. When the trailer is attached it must also be wired to the Envoy so that when you press the brake pedal the lights on the trailer respond. Someone at U-Haul, your GMC dealer or a local trailer hitch shop can assist you in getting the wiring connected properly. You may be able to do it yourself if you have a wiring harness hanging down from your hitch. If so, just attach it to the wiring connector on the trailer.

  • Ask someone to help you test out the wiring. Have someone stand at the back of the trailer while you press the brake pedal and test each blinker to make sure the wiring is connected properly. You can get pulled over and get a citation for driving without having the wiring connected properly.
