How to Get an IFTA Sticker

The International Fuel Tax Agreement sticker is required for all vehicles used to transport goods between the 48 contingent states and 10 Canadian provinces. Your base jurisdiction issues your IFTA sticker; this is the location where your transport vehicle is registered. If you do not travel outside of your state of jurisdiction to transport goods you are not required to obtain an IFTA sticker.

  • Contact the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration office in your state; use the FMCSA website to find the location nearest you to obtain specific information on where to apply for an IFTA sticker in your state.

  • Complete an application for an IFTA sticker at the correct office location for drivers in your state. All states allow you to do this in person or through the mail. Applications are available online for you to fill out and mail to your state office.

  • Provide information such as your name, address, contact information and your vehicle information. You must also provide your employer identification number or Social Security Number, whichever you use for your business.

  • Complete your application and deliver or mail it to your state office. The address is located on your state’s application form. You will have to write a check or money order for the total cost of your sticker; the price differs in each state.
