How to Tow a BMW

You don't necessarily need to hire a towing company to tow your BMW. You can do it yourself with the use of a flatbed tow truck and a few other implements. Most BMW cars already include the necessary towing equipment in the trunk of the car, including towing hooks for easy mounting onto the tow truck. In general, BMW's are usually best suited to flatbed tow trucks because their rear bumpers are lower than most other cars. Thus, if you were to use a truck other than a flatbed the bumper of your BMW could get damaged on the road.

Things You'll Need

  • Flatbed tow truck
  • Tow hooks
  • Screwdriver
  • Open the BMW trunk, and use a screwdriver to unfasten the latch that secures the toolbox. Take the metal hooks off and remove the screwdriver inside the toolbox.

  • Find the tow hook cover, which should be attached to the back wall of the bumper. Use the screwdriver to remove it.

  • Find the front tow hook cover. You can find this next to the fog lights to the right hand side of the vehicle. Remove it with the screwdriver.

  • Attach the tow hook covers to the front and back of the car. You can do this by using the screwdriver to secure them.

  • Remove the tow truck's winch -- you can do this by hand. Fix it to the tow hook at the back of the vehicle. Make sure that the winch is secure.

  • Put the car into neutral and disengage the parking brake.

  • Check that the winch is secure again. Carefully pull the vehicle on to the flatbed. Hold the winch securely. Put the vehicle in gear. Put the parking brake back on.
