How to Defeat a Silverado Seat Belt Reminder

The dreadful sound of the seat belt reminder can provoke road rage. The reminder sounds to let you know that you have not properly restrained yourself in your Chevrolet Silverado. In some instances--for example, if you live on a large acreage and have to drive to the mailbox--strapping on the seat belt may feel unwarranted. In these situations, you can defeat the seat belt reminder in your Silverado and enjoy a peaceful ride.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Socket wrench set
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Seat belt clip
  • Locate a junkyard. Speak with the dealer and ask if he has a Silverado of your model on the lot. If so, buy the driver’s-side seat belt assembly. Most junkyards will remove the parts for you. In case you have to do that work, take a socket wrench set and a flat-head screwdriver with you to the junkyard. Once you procure the seat belt assembly, cut the strap with scissors.

  • Remove the seat belt clip by sliding it off the strap. Insert the clip into the seat belt buckle on your truck. This will effectively disable the seat belt reminder.

  • Call an auto parts store. Stores often stock seat belt clips and won’t require you to buy the entire assembly. Seat belt clips are not a one-size-fits-all part, and the model number on your seat belt clip will often be different from the one that the store stocks.

For best results when you speak with an associate at the store, have your vehicle identification number handy. The store associate can use the number to determine which seat belt clip will fit your truck. After you purchase the correct seat belt clip, insert it into the buckle to stop the seat belt reminder from chiming.

  • Stretch out the seat belt as far as it will extend. Cross the strap and clip behind the driver’s seat. Slide the seat belt clip through the gap between the seat and the console. Plug the clip into the seat belt buckle. This won’t look as good as having a seat belt clip by itself, but it will effectively turn off the seat belt reminder.
