How to Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit in Colorado

There are several ways to qualify for a disabled parking permit in Colorado. You need a valid medical certification of legal blindness, limited mobility, pulmonary restriction or cardiac condition. You are eligible if you cannot walk without an assistive device such as a wheelchair, cane or brace. Mobility impairment due to arthritic, neurological or orthopedic conditions also qualifies. Obtaining a disabled parking permit is a relatively simple process--follow these steps to learn how.

Things You'll Need

  • Medical provider certification

Temporary or Permanent Placard

  • Meet one of Colorado's qualifications for impaired vision, limited mobility or other qualifying condition.

  • Print the Application for Persons with Disabilities Parking Privileges form online and complete the top portion. Select a qualifying condition and indicate whether you would like to receive 1 or 2 placards.

  • Take the form to a licensed physician or other valid medical provider who can certify your condition and sign the application.

  • Submit the application to your local motor vehicle office. You will receive a red placard for a temporary permit or blue for permanent disability. There is no fee for either temporary or permanent placards.

  • Hang the placard from the rearview mirror when parking in a parking space reserved for the disabled.

Disabled License Plates

  • Meet one of Colorado's qualifications for impaired vision, limited mobility or other qualifying condition.

  • Print the Application for Persons with Disabilities Parking Privileges form online and complete the top portion. Select a qualifying condition and indicate whether you would like to receive one placard in addition to your license plates.

  • Take the form to a licensed physician or other valid medical provider who can certify your condition and sign on the application.

  • Submit the application with a copy of your vehicle title or registration to your local motor vehicle office. To receive a Disabled Veteran Plate, also provide a written statement of the permanent disability being service-rendered on the appropriate letterhead from the Veterans Administration or branch of service.
