How to back out of your driveway safely

Safety First!

Things You'll Need

  • Car, seat belt, mirrors
  • Check for any obstructions behind or around the car and check for deflated or flat tires.

  • Unlock and get in your car and put on your safety harness! Be sure to check for any tearing or fraying on the seatbelt. Adjust the seat and both the side mirrors and rear view mirror if someone other than yourself drove the car last. Turn the ignition to start the car, keeping your foot on the brakes, put the car in reverse.

  • Check behind you and on both sides for any oncoming traffic, including pedestrians, vehicles, bicycles, children and animals.

  • Once you are sure it is clear, check the mirrors and behind you once more and slowly lift your foot off the brake, keeping the car in reverse, and back out of the driveway. Once you are out of the driveway, put the car in drive and you are on your way!
