How to Apply an I-PASS Transponder

The I-Pass is a box that you affix to the inside of the windshield of your vehicle to pay tolls as you drive through Illinois toll booths. I-Pass is available to Illinois residents that travel toll roads. The benefit of becoming an I-Pass owner is that you no longer have to worry about whether or not you have enough cash to pay tolls and you never have to stop and wait in toll lines. With an I-Pass you can drive through the I-Pass lane without ever stopping; however, I-Pass does not work correctly unless you mount it to your windshield correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver

LCD and Flat Pack Transponders

  • Clean the windshield of your vehicle; it must be dry and warm. Adjust your rearview mirror to the correct location it is in when you drive.

  • Locate the arrows on the I-Pass transponder and point them toward the roof of the vehicle.

  • Place the flat pack or LCD transponder behind the rearview mirror one inch below the roof line of the vehicle.

  • Remove the plastic located on the back of the I-Pass transponder and stick the transponder to the vehicle's windshield. Hold the transponder in place for at least 15 seconds to ensure it sticks properly.

LPT Transponders

  • Affix LPT transponders to the front license plate of your vehicle. You must request an LPT transponder if you have a vehicle with metal components in the windshield -- check your vehicle owner's manual for this information.

  • Remove the top mounting screws from your front license plate and place the holes of the LPT transponder over the license plate mounting holes.

  • Screw the mounting screws back into your LPT transponder and license plate using the correct screwdriver.
