How to Do Launch Control

Launch control is the art of manipulating the the amount of grip that the drive wheels have on the ground as you accelerate quickly from a stop. It is most commonly used in drag-racing, where successful launch control can often mean the difference between winning and losing, even if you're driving the faster car. Learning proper launch control takes patience and practice before you can achieve a consistently good launch.

  • Turn on your car and allow the engine to idle. Ensure that your practice area is a closed-off area where you will encounter no other cars or pedestrians.

  • Depress the clutch of your car -- if it has one -- and keep it depressed while pushing the transmission into "First Gear" or "Drive" if you are using an automatic.

  • Rev the engine while keeping the clutch pedal depressed, or by keeping the brake pedal depressed if you are using an automatic. Hold the revs steady at a rev level slightly before the level at which your engine's power band peaks. You can determine the power bands by driving the car around and determining what rev levels produce the maximum power and acceleration.

  • Release the clutch, or brake pedal if using an automatic, once you have reached the appropriate rev level. Quickly depress the acceleration pedal to continue accelerating after the launch.
