How to Start a Ford F-250 Diesel

Ford F-250 pickups were introduced in model year 1953 with various configurations available throughout the years. Modern F-250 diesel pickups are equipped from the factory with Power Stroke diesel motors that come in four displacement sizes: 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 liters. The Ford F-250 is one of the best-selling full-size pickup trucks in the United States, due in part to its reliability and ease of operation.

Things You'll Need

  • Keys
  • Place the truck key into the ignition. Turn the key to the "on" position, which will illuminate all of the warning lights on the vehicle's dashboard and enable all of the truck's electrical systems to turn on. Watch for the "wait to start" light on the dashboard to turn off. This light indicates that the truck's glow plugs are heating to the proper temperature.

  • Depress the clutch and brake pedal with the gear shift in the "neutral" position in trucks equipped with a manual transmission. Place the gear shift in "park" and depress the brake pedal in trucks with an automatic transmission. Ensure that the parking brake is engaged for either type of vehicle.

  • Turn the key to the "start" position and release the key once the engine has stopped turning over and the vehicle is running on its own. The key will automatically return to the "on" position, where is should remain, while driving. To begin driving, release the parking brake and place the truck in gear.
