How to Avoid Problems While Driving a Manual Transmission

One of the most frustrating things about learning to drive a manual transmission is the problems that you encounter. Sometimes you just want to quit because you can't seem to stop the car from stalling or the tires from spinning. You can avoid many problems if you take a minute to figure out you're doing wrong.

  • Let the clutch out slowly while in first gear. If you let the clutch out too quickly when driving a manual transmission, you'll stall the car. You can let the clutch out faster when switching to the higher gears.

  • Watch the amount of gas that you give the car. Most new drivers have a tendency to give a manual transmission car way too much gas. Press lightly on the gas pedal to give the car the adequate amount.

  • Set the parking brake. Many new drivers who are used to automatic cars have a tendency to forget to set the brake when parking. You should also remember to use the brake when on a hill.

  • Check the RPMs. You want to keep the RPMs low and let out the clutch when you get to the RPMS that are needed to shift into the next gear. Many vehicles respond well to shifting at 3000 RPM, but that is not the case with all vehicle types.

  • Learn heel to toe downshifting. This technique can help stop the car from lurching when you are shifting to a different gear. You do this driving procedure by simultaneously moving your right foot over the brake and throttle pedal.
